Attention: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your PC will continue to operate, Microsoft will cease providing critical services like security patches and technical assistance, leaving your system vulnerable and unsupported.
Why Business Owners Must Act Now
- Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your devices become prime targets for viruses, malware, and cyberattacks, putting your sensitive business data at serious risk. Upgrading your operating system is essential to protect your company.
- Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are designed to function optimally with the latest operating systems. Post-Windows 10 support, some programs may malfunction or cease to work entirely, disrupting your workflow.
- Compliance Risks: Businesses handling confidential information or adhering to strict regulations must maintain up-to-date systems to avoid legal penalties and ensure compliance.
What Are Your Upgrade Options?
Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 before the support deadline. However, not all Windows 10 PCs meet the stringent hardware requirements for Windows 11, resulting in upgrade errors if attempted.
If your current device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these alternatives:
- Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
- Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for continued protection
- Switch to a Linux operating system as an alternative
- Ignore the deadline and risk your business security (not recommended!)
Regardless of your choice, always back up your important files before making any changes to safeguard your data during the transition.
Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for Windows 10. Keep in mind, ESU is a temporary fix available only for one year after the end-of-life date.
To access ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Alternatively, a free option exists but requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and folders to OneDrive. Since OneDrive provides 5 GB of free storage, you might need to purchase additional space for larger data volumes.
Don't delay—register for ESU before the October 14 deadline to ensure eligibility.
